There is a stunning new exhibition at The White Cube gallery in London showcasing the work of Julie Mehretu.
"They departed for their own country another way” reads the introduction to the exhibition.
It states that the title of the show draws from the biblical verse where God speaks to the Three Wise Men through a dream, warning them against the duplicity of King Herod, so that they decide to return from visiting the baby Jesus via an alternative route.
It goes on to say that her work focusses on conflict, especially the war in Ukraine, widespread displacement and power.
The third room in particular is mesmerising. You walk into this huge white space and her gigantic artworks arrest you. They look almost digital, layered with luminous paint which changes colour in the light.
To my friend and I they looked more like skeletons at a disco than the Three Kings! The more you look, the more you see…. Eyes, breasts, legs flailing. All in the most beautiful colours.
So lucky to live in London where all of this is on our doorstep to enjoy for free.
The exhibition runs until 5 November
